Civil engineering & construction · Nigeria & United Kingdom

Roads, bridges, and the ground they stand on.

Philwils is a heavy civil contractor. We build highways, crossings, mine infrastructure, drainage and containment works; and we build them for the conditions they will actually sit in.

Who we are

Six disciplines, one contractor.

Our expertise spans the critical intersections of infrastructure, civil engineering, and construction—whether it is a road requiring a bridge or culvert, a mining operation requiring drainage solutions, or a water channel requiring structural works. By delivering these complementary disciplines under one roof, we minimise coordination gaps, streamline project execution, and provide a single point of accountability for the overall outcome.t.

We work for government authorities, mining and industrial operators, developers, and principal contractors who need a civils partner on a package of works.

Capability

What we build.

Each discipline can be taken as a standalone contract or as part of a wider scheme. Tell us the site and the problem and we will tell you which of these it actually needs.

Road & highway construction

Our capabilities cover access roads, estate networks, trunk roads, and dual carriageways, with integrated drainage and erosion control designed to protect the road throughout its service life.

  • Earthworks, excavation and subgrade improvement
  • Sub-base, base course and asphaltic concrete works
  • Kerbs, walkways, markings and signage
  • Carriageway drainage and erosion protection

Bridges & flyovers

By managing the substructure, superstructure, deck, and approach works under a single line of responsibility, we ensure seamless coordination, structural integrity, and efficient project delivery.

  • Piling, pile caps, piers and abutments
  • Precast and in-situ decks
  • Bearings, joints, parapets and deck drainage
  • Scour protection and temporary works over water

Mining infrastructure

The essential infrastructure that keeps extraction operations moving, from haul roads designed to withstand heavy, loaded traffic to stable platforms, water management systems, and foundations for critical plant and equipment.

  • Haul roads built for the loaded case
  • Bulk earthworks, benching and stockpile areas
  • Interceptor drains, sumps and settlement ponds
  • Foundations for plant, workshops and weighbridges

Civil & structural engineering

The technical foundation of every project we deliver combining structural design, engineering expertise, and rigorous quality control to ensure every element is built for strength, stability, and long-term performance.

  • Pads, rafts, piles and ground improvement
  • RC frames, slabs, cores and structural steel
  • Retaining walls and below-ground waterproofing
  • Structural assessment and strengthening

Waste & environmental management

We deliver engineered containment, remediation earthworks, and practical site controls that protect the environment and maintain compliance throughout construction and beyond.

  • Lining systems, capping and leachate collection
  • Contaminated land earthworks and segregation
  • Erosion and sediment control
  • Restoration, regrading and revegetation

Urban drainage & flood control

From urban drainage networks to major channels and flood-control structures, our approach considers both construction and long-term maintenance.

  • Lined channels, box culverts and covered drains
  • Piped storm networks and connections
  • Outfalls, headwalls and scour protection
  • Desilting and recapacitating existing drains

Why it matters

Infrastructure Is Only as Strong as the Details Behind It.

Infrastructure rarely fails because of the headline design. It fails where the critical details are overlooked. Roads in demanding climates do not typically deteriorate simply because of the asphalt, they fail when water reaches the subgrade and drainage systems cannot manage it. Bridges are not only about the deck; long-term performance depends on details such as joints, bearings, foundations, and protection against scour.

That is why we integrate drainage into road design from the outset, test and verify formation before pavement construction, and give temporary works the same level of engineering discipline as permanent structures.

How a project runs

From survey to handover.

Every project moves through the same four stages. What changes is the depth of each one — and we tell you at the start which stage carries the risk on your scheme.

Stage 01

Survey & feasibility

Site walkover, topographic survey and ground information. We establish what the site is before anyone prices what it will cost.

Stage 02

Design & engineering

Detailed design or design review, buildability, temporary works, method and programme. Problems get found on paper, where they are cheap.

Stage 03

Construction

Works delivered with quality control, materials testing and progress records kept as the job proceeds — not assembled at the end.

Stage 04

Handover & aftercare

As-built records, test certification, defects support and a maintenance regime the asset owner can actually run.

Safety, quality & environment

Managed on site, evidenced on paper.

Our HSE and quality approach is built into the method statement for each activity rather than run as a parallel exercise. Risk assessments, permits, inspection and test plans and environmental controls are prepared before mobilisation and reviewed as conditions change.

  • Task-specific risk assessments and method statements before work starts
  • Competent supervision and induction for every person on site
  • Inspection and test plans agreed with the client or engineer up front
  • Temporary works designed and checked independently of the crew erecting them
  • Sediment, dust, noise and waste controls planned into the works programme
  • Incident reporting and close-out recorded and shared with the client

Where we work

Two bases, one standard.

Philwils operates across Nigeria and the United Kingdom. Our Nigerian operation handles highway, bridge, mining and drainage works nationwide. Our UK presence supports structural and environmental work and gives clients on either side a single point of contact.

Specification, testing regimes and record-keeping are the same wherever the site is. What changes is the ground — West African laterite, seasonal rainfall and rapid urban growth ask different questions of a design than a UK site does.
